Preparation of 0.05 M oxalic acid solution
Preparation of 0.05 M oxalic acid solution:
Aim
To prepare 500 ml of M/20 or 0.05 M oxalic acid.
Apparatus:
Volumetric flask, weighing balance, Watch Glass, Beaker, Funnel Glass rod
Chemicals:
Oxalic Acid dihydrate (H2C2O4. 2H2O), De-mineralized water.
Theory:
The molecular mass of oxalic acid (H2C2O4. 2H2O) = 126.0 gm
hence for preparing 500 ml of M/20 or 0.05 M oxalic acid
———————- (1)
M = Molarity of Oxalic acid
WB = Weight of oxalic acid required
MB = Molecular Weight of oxalic acid (126.0 gm)
VS = volume of solution (here 500 mL)
Substituting the values and calculating for WB,
WB =3.15 gm
Procedure:
- Take a clean and dry watch glass and put it on the weighing balance.
- Tare the weight of the watch glass and said the weighing balance to zero
- weigh exactly 3.15 g of oxalic acid
- Transfer this oxalic acid clean 500 and beaker. Wash the watch class with water and transfer the sticking particles into the beaker. Caution wash the watch class with a minimum quantity of water.
- Dissolve the crystals’ minimum quantity of water by gently stirring the glass rod
- Transfer the solution into the volumetric flask measuring 500 mL
- Wash the beaker with small portions of water and then transferred the water to the volumetric flask until 500 mil mark on the volumetric flask is achieved
- Make-up the volume to exactly 500 mL mark by adding a drop with a pipette
- Put the stopper on the volumetric flask and shake it gently to make the solution uniform throughout
Calculations for Preparing 500 mL of M/40 Mohr Salt solution
In the formula of molarity (1)
M = Molarity of Mohr Salt solution (M/40 or 0.025 M)
WB = Weight of Mohr Salt required
MB = Molecular Weight of Mohr Salt (392 gm)
VS = volume of solution (here 500 mL)
Substituting the values and calculating for WB,
WB =4.90 gm
Follow the above-mentioned procedure to prepare the solution
Calculations for Preparing 500 mL of M/10 Sodium Carbonate solution
In the formula of molarity (1)
M = Molarity of Sodium Carbonate solution (M/10 or 0.1 M)
WB = Weight of Sodium Carbonate required
MB = Molecular Weight of Sodium Carbonate (106 gm)
VS = volume of solution (here 500 mL)
Substituting the values and calculating for WB,
WB =5.30 gm
Follow the above-mentioned procedure to prepare the solution
